Hey Kids! Learn More About Your Teeth!

What is tooth decay?
Tooth decay is the destruction of the tooth enamel (outer hard covering).  It occurs when sugars and starches such as cakes, candy, pop, milk or raisins are frequently left on your teeth.  Bacteria, or germs, that live in the mouth thrive on these foods, producing acids as a result.  After just a few days, these acids begin to destroy the enamel on your teeth resulting in tooth decay, or a cavity.

How do I prevent tooth decay?
Follow these steps to help prevent tooth decay:

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
Clean between your teeth with dental floss
Eat nutritious and well-balanced meals
When you snack choose foods like cheese, fresh vegetables, a piece of fruit or plain yogurt

When at our office ask if you might benefit from extra home fluoride which strengthens your teeth, and about sealants (a plastic protective coating) for the chewing surfaces of the back permanent teeth.

Sports and Mouthguards
When school-aged children play sports there is always a chance of injury. They should wear a mouth protector. This includes a wide range of sports such as football, hockey, soccer, basketball, volleyball and lacrosse.
There are three types of mouthguards:

Stock - these come preformed and ready to wear; unfortunately they are bulky and can make breathing difficult.
Boil & Bite - these also are store-bought. They soften in warm water and offer a little better fit. Again, breathing may be difficult because they can be very thick.
Custom-fitted - this type is made in the dentist’s office and are more expensive than other versions.  They offer a more comfortable fit than any protector you can buy at the store.
